Does the advent of Artificial Intelligence mean the death of the astrologer?
Lately I find myself discussing AI’s role during readings with clients and with other astrologers. It is a fact that AI can run complicated algorithms in minutes, and that it is available to anyone with a phone. That part is not in dispute. What is in dispute is whether a chart readout is the same thing as a reading. It is not. AI is far from replacing the human-to-human experience. To my fellow astrologers: your job is safe. To our clients: your readings will only get better.
This is because AI is left-brain, and astrology — although it employs the left brain — relies on the right-brain intuition of the astrologer. Astrology as it is practiced by a machine is a series of steps: gather the birth data, choose a zodiac system, pull the planetary positions from the ephemeris, assemble the charts, analyze the aspects, etc. and voilà — we have a “reading.” But ask the AI if it has intuition. Ask it how it knows what it knows. This is where it fails, and always will.
In reality, all of its information is based upon human knowledge. It can only facilitate the calculative work of gathering and organizing data. It does not know anything. Because of that reliance on inherited text, taking it at its word is a dangerous mistake.
An astrologer is different because they employ their intuition. And what is intuition? It is a certainty. Information can inform, but knowledge means to know something — with a doubt. Without intuition we could never feel at ease or satisfied. We could never experience the peace that does not need another question; we could never taste satori or enlightenment.
Intuition isn’t a hunch. It’s the moment the chart stops being data and becomes recognition.
That moment is the difference between a printout and a session.
And intuition works both ways. Ask yourself what part of me can know something with certainty? That is an interesting question, because to answer it we first have to acknowledge who is asking. Not every question comes from the same place. Will I get married? How much money will I make? When will I die? These are common questions in a session. Sometimes they are necessary. Often they are not enough. Who is asking them? In other words: is it the ego, or the soul?
If it is the ego, the astrologer is treated like a vending machine. Question after question, coin after coin, and we leave emptier and more insecure than we arrived — not much closer to what we actually wanted. Questions from the soul leave us lighter. We become satiated from within. The need for questioning disappears. Because of this distinction the job of the astrologer is to bypass the ego by tapping into their own intuition and access the higher wisdom of the soul.
Think of the natal chart as a map and the sky as weather. The map tells you the terrain you were born into — the houses, the dignities, the karmic knots, and patterns you continue to weave. The weather is what is moving through that terrain: a transit, a dasha, a moment, a season. A good app can draw the map with more precision than most of us could manage by hand in 1970. It can even report the weather. What it cannot do is stand with you in the rain and tell you what the rain is for.
That is why the session still matters. The querent is not paying for arithmetic. They are paying for someone who can look at the same glyphs they could generate at home and then listen — to the chart, to the silence between the questions, to the thing the soul is trying to say before the hour is over. The astrologer becomes inspired by what they see and their inspiration should leave the querent feeling whole. If our clients do not leave feeling at peace, we have not communicated what the soul wants them to know. AI can never access that information, because that information is not stored in the training set. It arrives in the room.
None of this means artificial intelligence has no place in astrology. In fact, we must begin to adopt it. Since the beginning of astrology, astrologers have invented ways to collect, store, and retrieve data faster. Tables. Ephemerides. Software. AI is the next instrument in that line. Artificial intelligence promises real breakthroughs — from mundane to synastry to medical astrology — if we use the machine to run thousands of iterations of planetary placements and combinations, we can greatly accelerate what may have taken years to notice alone. But, if we refuse to adapt, we will be replaced by the astrologers who learned to use it.
So the next era of astrology is not the death of the astrologer. It is a chance for the resurrection of the part of the work that was always the point. The machine can perform the arithmetic. The astrologer must learn to listen. That ability to tap in and truly listen is the session. It is what the querent is paying for.
The app can draw the map; the reading is still a conversation.
We must keep improving ourselves as astrologers — becoming clearer channels — while employing AI to sharpen our technique. Calculation without listening leads us nowhere. And, listening without calculation is pure magic and rare. The work now is to leverage both, for the benefit of the querent. To realign them with their soul’s intention.
